007 § Accidental Video § Appa

[When the feed first comes on, all that can be heard are Appa's annoyed bison bleats. He's sick of the rain, sick of the water, sick of his grass being drowned.]

I know, I know!

[The PCD is a bit away from them, carefully tucked into Aang's shirt, which he's tied up on a low branch to keep the PCD as dry as he can.]

[Aang studies the area Appa stays in and earthbends an Appa-sized square of it a bit above the water level.He thinks for a moment and earthbends two more segments up, at angles to make a sort of earthen tent. He knows it won't last until Sunday, but it'll work for now!]

[Appa bleats at him, annoyed, but gets into his little tent. And then bleats at him again. He's still soaked here!]

Yeah, I know!

[Aang hops up into Appa's little tent and thinks for a minute. Appa's probably chilly, too! He makes an airball in his hands and works at it with firebending. It bursts into a pretty whoosh of fire and he tries again. Once he's gotten so the air is nicely warm but not going whoosh into fire, he expands it and throws it at Appa. It takes a few minutes to get the very soaked skybison dry and warm but it works!]

[He hops down and fetches his shirt and the PCD without realizing it's on and goes back to sitting with Appa.]

At least it's not like the storm we almost drowned in!

[Appa gives him another annoyed bleat. Stupid rain.]

Oh! [He grins. He sometimes forgets that not everyone knows what bending is!] I can control the elements. The airball I made with Airbending.

[H-How even does-]

You are human. [It's not a question.] How do you do that?

[He's not a witch, or a creature or demon or anything that would be capable of bending the elements to his will. Although, he is a powerful little child, and that much was obvious when they first spoke. There's even something different about him, something almost ethereal or maybe cosmic, but details are like holding water in her hands: when she tries to grasp it it slips away.]

A lot of people in my world can bend one element. The Air Nomads are Airbenders. The people of the Water Tribes are Waterbenders. And the people in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation are Earth and Firebenders.

[He gives her a sheepish little smile.] I can do all four because I'm the Avatar.

The abilities are divided by race or tribe? [How odd.]

The avatar of who? Your god?

Yup! I'm not really sure why, though, because we're all one people. Probably because the Air Nomads lived where there were a lot of cliffs and the Water Tribes live at the north and south poles where there's a lot of water.

Of the world. The Avatar is the incarnation of the spirit of the world, and every time one is born, they're the reincarnation of the last Avatar and hold all their memories and wisdom. It just... takes some getting used to. [He grins.]

[expunger]

The world? [O-Oh. Raphael sits up a little straighter, eyes sharp. Aang might recognize this reaction (however subtle) as someone realizing they're talking to someone very powerful.]

It makes perfect sense to me. In a certain sense, you are immortal.

[He sees the reaction but just really lets it go. He understands the reaction, he just doesn't ask for it.] Yup. So I'm the bridge between the living world and the spirit world and I'm the one who is supposed to keep balance and bring peace. The Fire Nation was after me back home for a while because I was the only one who was able to stop them from taking over the world.

Yeah, in a sense. I can talk to the other incarnations if I need them and they can help me.

c-can raphael pop in on him she wants to investigate appa so bad ;;

[She's eating this up you don't even know.]

Hm. [How almost... Eastern. It's intriguing, even if the cosmology sounds wrong and strange.] How are you chosen as the Avatar?

[It can't be genetic, like hunting or vessel capability, since it sounds like reincarnation plays a role.]

Well, the Avatar is reincarnated into a different nation every time. Water, Earth, Fire, Air. Avatar Roku was from the Fire Nation, so they knew the next Avatar would be born to the Air Nomads. I was born at the moment of his death, but the monks weren't sure until I was a few years older that I was the next Avatar.

[expunger]

But you were. It was your destiny.

[A moment, and the PCD shuts off with a snap as she appears right next to Appa in a faint flutter of wings. Raphael lays a hand on his furry body, looking at his face quizzically.] Your animal, what is he?

[Appa startles at the suddenly there angel and snorts at her before settling back down.]

[Aang, also, looks a bit surprised as the suddenly there Raphael, but he grins.] He's my sky bison! A lot of people here have never seen one.

[expunger]

[Still staring, utterly unconcerned by Appa's reaction.]

I know every creature that has ever flown, swum, or walked the Earth. I remember their Creation, and naming the new beasts of the land.

[Raphael presses her hand against him gently but firmly, as if sensing something only she knows to look for.] The last time I saw something new, the planet was still young.

[Appa is unconcerned about being touched.]

There used to be more of them in my world. They're the original airbenders.

You learned the power from them. [How strange, and curious. Raphael raises a hand to Appa's face, waiting a few seconds to let him adjust before resting it on his cheek gently.] He's too old for his age.

[A sideways glance.] So are you.

[Aang laughs.] Yup! He's 107 and I'm 113! We sorta got frozen in an iceberg for a hundred years.

[expunger]

And you still live? [She turns her face back to Appa and takes a hand off his cheek, offering him an unrealistically large apple that didn't exist five seconds ago.]

[Appa loves you, Raphael! And he's going to devour this apple now!]

Yup. I went into the Avatar state and made the iceberg. [And that's totally normal! Really!] That's so neat! How'd you make that apple appear?

[expunger]

I have smote entire cities into rubble and rained fire from the very heavens. [Here Appa have a pear] Conjuring fruit is hardly difficult.

Wow. [Aang is genuinely impressed by the fruit appearing.]

[Appa is all too happy to have a pear!]

How come you've smote cities before?

God commanded it. [Just feeding your bison a pear and scratching his nose, nbd.]

Why would a god do that?

Not a god, but God. The only God.

The city was sinful, and deserved punishment.

[Aang raises a brow at that, but doesn't push it. He's never heard of just one god, but his beliefs aren't centered around a god.]

Why not just teach them and show them better? Why destroy them?

It was not my command, Avatar. Simply my duty to carry out. [Raphael scritches gently at Appa's cheek while feeding him grapes.]
